Effect of Extension Piece Design on Catch Patterns in a Mediterranean Bottom Trawl Fishery

چکیده
The catch composition of bottom trawls is commonly refined and improved through changes in codend design. Measures like reducing the number meshes circumference or turning diamond netting by 90 degrees are well known to improve size selectivity fish species with rounded cross-sectional shape. Based on this we speculated whether same measures, if applied other parts a trawl, would provide similar benefits as codend. Therefore, experiments were carried out deploying these trawl extension piece Mediterranean fishery. However, for European hake monkfish, results showed no indication pattern compared standard trawl. Contrary, red mullet, one most important fishery, jeopardized selection obtained piece. lesson learnt from study was that design work do not necessarily In fact, they can even have negative effects.

catch composition of the bottom trawl fishery along the coasts of karataş-adana (northeastern mediterranean sea)
the catch composition of the bottom trawl fishery along the coasts of karataş was evaluated in the 2002-2003 fishing season. a total of 110 species were registered, the fishes showed the highest diversity (90 species) followed by 15 crustaceans species and 5 species of cephalopods. the highest catch per unit effort (cpue) value (66.8 kg h -1 ) was recorded in september when the fishing season w...
متن کاملA long term (1949-2010) study of catch and effort in Israeli trawl fishery, Eastern Mediterranean Sea
The trawl fishery of the Mediterranean coast of Israel was analyzed vis á vis catch and fishing effort for the years 1949-2010. The Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) was calculated using the Fox surplus-yield model and was found to be 1,413 ton per annum using 1,415 units of effort (fishing days X engine power divided by 1000). Only during nine years (1997-2005) did fishing effort exceed the valu...
متن کاملInfluence of tow duration on catch performance of trawl survey in the Mediterranean Sea
The aim of this study was to assess the effect of tow duration on catch per unit of swept area (CPUE), trawl catch performance, and the proportion of the species caught in a trawl survey. Longer tows are expected to have a greater probability of catching species. An average of 26 species were caught in the first 30 minutes, whereas only about one additional species was caught in the next 30 min...

The bycatch of small cetaceans in commercial fisheries is a global wildlife management problem. We used data from skippers' logbooks and independent observers to assess common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) bycatch patterns between 2003 and 2009 in the Pilbara Trawl Fishery, Western Australia. Both datasets indicated that dolphins were caught in all fishery areas, across all depths and...
